Discover Fukuoka & Beppu Treasures

Get an insider's view of local customs in Fukuoka and marvel at the famed, beautiful hot springs of Beppu.

About Your Trip

Experience the welcoming, modern appeal of Fukuoka and the scenic beauty of Beppu during this DreamTrip getaway to Japan’s southern island, Kyushu. Venture to Hakata, an ancient city within Fukuoka that is famed for producing traditional Japanese Hakata dolls for 400 years. Visit Hakata Doll Shop Shogetsudo full of these colorful clay figurines and participate in a doll-painting class. Explore the beautiful Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine, then transfer to the southeastern coastal town of Beppu, a popular hot-springs spa destination.

In Beppu, stop at 3 of the 8 boiling springs sources that, together, make up Hells of Beppu: Chinoike-Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), Umi-Jigoku (Sea Hell), Yama-Jigoku (Mountain Hell). Escape the hot steam to Lake Kinrin, a picturesque area of forests and hills, and then travel to Mt. Aso’s Daikanbo Peak for spectacular mountain and valley views. Back in Fukuoka, enjoy all the city has to offer. Visitors to this region are drawn to its soft-sand beaches, modern malls and historic temples. Top Fukuoka attractions include Karatsu Castle and scenic Ohori Park.

What we love:
• Great for souvenirs, Hakata dolls are easily recognizable figurines that depict kimono-clad women, samurai warriors, playful children and more.
• The Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine was built on the burial site of the deified spirit of Sugawara Michizane, the god of calligraphy and literature.
• The Hells of Beppu, consisting of 8 hot springs, is designated a national “Place of Scenic Beauty” by the Japanese government.

Destination

Located on the northern shore of Japan’s Kyushu Island, Fukuoka boasts a robust history spanning over 1,000 years. Yet, the capital city is surprisingly modern, her streets lined with open-air restaurants, entertainment venues and quaint shops. Local culinary favorites commonly associated with Fukuoka include Hakata-style ramen, mentaiko and motsunabe. Popular activities include art galleries, nighttime beach parties, live music and street-food stalls.

Beppu is a popular vacation destination for hot-springs enthusiasts, thanks to more than 2,500 onsen, or Japanese baths, in the area. These sought-after geothermal waters range from traditional, hot-springs baths to sand- and mud-baths. Besides being a place to socialize, hot-springs baths claim to offer various health benefits, including improved circulation, pain relief and mental relaxation.
